Tips For Chosing The Perfect Childrens Books
It's stated time and time again how important reading to our children is. Now, the question is; are you listening? If you're a parent, you can begin reading to your children at any time; even as early as one day old. It doesn't begin when they hit kindergarten. It all starts with you. You can easily pick up a few childrens books and begin reading stories to them at nap time or when they're turning-in for the evening. Trust me when I tell you it's an utter blast to read to your little ones. I started this process with my daughter when she was only a few months old. You want to know what else? She loved it from the very beginning. This is quality time spent with your children, and it will definitely benefit them down the road. The key is finding something they're interested in.
You've probably seen the starter books for infants and toddlers. They generally have plenty of pictures, not a lot of text, and maybe some materials to touch and feel on the thick pages. My daughter was entranced by these starter books. I would sit her on my lap, and hold the book right in front of her, capturing her attention as long as we read. This is a learning process. It's a perfect way to get your children enthused about childrens books and reading while they're very young and impressionable. Soon they will be choosing the books at the local library or bookstore on their own. This is when it gets really exciting. Since they are calling the shots on what childrens books to read, they maintain a strong interest in hearing the stories. After all, it is what they picked out on their own.
If you're looking for suggestions, there are awesome childrens books to suit any age. For children in the 2nd grade, you might consider books like Junie B. Jones, or Clue. If your child is in the 5th or 6th grade, Goosebumps are a blast to read with them. Well, that is if they enjoy spooky stories. My daughter goes nuts over these books and short stories, and I can certainly tell that I have her undivided attention the entire time I'm reading. It never fails; she always requests a second story.
